Letter written to the Brooklyn Daily Eagle on January 1, 1862.
The Deserters of The 14th Regt.
The following letter from Corporal Carlton of the Fourteenth Regiment
explains itself, and shows beyond a doubt that great injustice has been done to
at least two men of his company who have been advertised as deserters:
CAMP MARION, Jan 1, 1862
To the Editor of the Brooklyn Eagle:
The issue of your paper of the 28th inst. Containing
the list of deserted soldiers of the regiment is before me. I beg to call your attention
to the names of Wm. Blake and James Pugh, quoted therein. Both of these parties are now
here, the former lying at the Brigade hospital and not expected to live suffering from an
attack of brain fever. The later fulfilling his duties as becoming a soldier.
By giving this a place in your valuable paper you will
do but justice to the accused, and oblige yours,
N.E. Carlton
Corporal Co.E, 14th Regt. N.Y.S.M.
