Thanks for the comment! I’Ve just updated it for the 1. From what I’m gathering, I may have to re-install XP and do a hands on install of the JMicron driver at some point in the installation process, but I don’t have a floppy drive to pull this move off. Hotpluging works just fine now. I just upgraded to the latest JMicron drivers and that seems to have done the trick: I only mention this to demonstrate what a noob I am.

JMicron JMB36X SATA Controller Driver Driver – TechSpot
My disk drives were running extremely poorly after that, so I uninstalled the JMicron driver, did a re-boot and now everything is more or less where I was to begin with.

I had tried to use an eSATA drive a few weeks ago and kept getting an “This drive needs to be formatted” message or the drive wouldn’t be detected unless it was connected at boot time no hotplugging. Can I install the JMicron driver from it? Not an IT pro? I have exactly the same issue.
